When to visit Greece

Late May–June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, open ferry schedules, and none of the August chaos. July–August is peak everything — prices, crowds, and the meltemi wind that occasionally cancels high-speed ferries. October–April is wonderful for Athens, Crete and the mainland, but many island hotels and restaurants close.

Quick answers

Do I need to rent a car on the islands? On Naxos and Crete, yes. On Santorini, Mykonos and Paros, buses and ATVs cover most of it.
Cash or card? Cards work almost everywhere now; keep €50 in cash for beach tavernas and kiosks.
How far ahead to book ferries? 2–4 weeks in summer — full details in my ferry guide.
